Welcome back to Instructions Not Included. This is episode 10, Formula Feeding for Dads. Stepping up when breastfeeding just isn't the plan. Let's get it.
Claude:Welcome back dads. Today, on Instructions Not Included, we're tackling a topic that's often overlooked formula feeding. This is for those dads whose partners aren't breastfeeding or have chosen to supplement this episode. Here is your guide to becoming a bottle feeding pro. Let's get started.
Claude:Here's some essential tips for dads who are bottle feeding. Let's start with the basics warming the milk. You want to heat the formula to a lukewarm temperature and avoid microwaving. If all possible, you can use either a bottle warmer or a bowl of warm water. After warming the bottle, you do want to just squirt a little bit on your skin just to make sure it's not too hot for the baby. Cradle your baby in your arms with their head slightly tilted back, and hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle. This is to prevent air bubbles. Offer frequent breaks to allow your baby to swallow and to prevent overfeeding. Watch for the cues, like your baby turning away from the bottle or pushing it out with their tongue. This could mean that the baby's either finished feeding or just needs to burp. You do want to burp your baby frequently during and after feeding. This is to prevent gas and discomfort.
Claude:Creating that special bonding experience is important Even though men can't breastfeed, we can still create a special bonding experience during feeding time, like just talking to your baby, singing them a song, letting them grab and hold onto your finger while they eat, or just simply gazing into their eyes. But as a dad, it is extremely important to create that bonding experience. Remember, dad, formula feeding is a choice and it's just as valid as breastfeeding. If your partner isn't able to breastfeed or chooses to supplement, be supportive and understanding. Here's how you can help. It's always good to share the load. Offer to handle some of the night feedings or early morning feedings, just to give your partner some rest. Let your partner know how grateful you are for her efforts, whether she's breastfeeding or formula feeding. Just letting her know that you do care and you understand goes a long way. Quick quote a father's love is the most precious gift a child can receive.
Claude:Dads, formula feeding can be a beautiful bonding experience. Embrace this opportunity to connect with your baby and provide the nourishment they need. And, of course, before I get out of here, as always, questions for the dad. Question number one, that is to be if your partner chooses to formula feed, how do you plan to involve yourself in the feeding process. Question number two what are some of your biggest concerns or questions about formula feeding? And question number three how can you create a supportive environment for your partner if she struggles with breastfeeding? Remember, dads, formula feeding is a perfectly valid choice. Embrace this opportunity to bond with your baby and provide the nourishment they need.
